cob oven course

On this 2 day course, learn where to find soil for building projects, how to analyse it and how to turn it into a viable building material. Participants will learn the traditional technique for foot-mixing cob (earth and straw) and will also learn why different cob mixes are needed for the different layers of the oven. As well as building the cob oven itself, get hands-on tips for building the stone base and enjoy a tour of the Mud and Wood House.

This course will be taught by cob-builder, Colin Ritchie at a house very close to the Mud and Wood House. We will meet up at the Mud and Wood House. Please arrive in time on Day 1, to ensure that you can make your way to the course venue.

What to Bring:

This is a very practical hands-on course with all workshops taking place outdoors. Bring good waterproof clothes and footwear. Clothes/footwear will get muddy.

Bring a notebook and pen for theory. A hardback notebook or a clipboard is advisable if you want to take notes during outdoor workshops. Handouts will be provided.

Please bring samples of your own soil if you want to test if it is suitable for making your own cob.

Testimonials for Cob Oven Course

"Very enjoyable. Made me want to come back and learn something else new."
Brian Monaghan, Dublin

"I really enjoyed my weekend. The course was really well run with lots of information and at a nice easy-going pace, but we still completed the oven and had time to do some sculpting. The food was lovely and the hosts were very welcoming, relaxed and informative. Thank you."
Eddie Carr, Ballycastle, Co. Antrim

"A thoroughly enjoyable weekend in every way. Colin and Féile were most welcoming and friendly and informative. I am very happy in the knowledge I gained to go home and attempt my own oven. I would highly recommend this cob oven course to anybody."
Nuala, Galway

"We have learnt so much! The cob oven course covered everything we needed to know. Colin and Féile are great teachers and fantastically easy going. Lunch was delicious and cake even better. We'll be back!"
Liane and Stella, Dublin and Offaly

"Some while back I did a little research on cob as a building material and concluded that I would give it a go some day and try to build something beautiful from the mud in my backyard. having spent the weekend with Colin and Féile at their beautiful home, that day has been brought significantly closer. I spent the weekend getting my boots and hands muddy and learning all I needed to know to give me the confidence to build a cob oven of my own. Colin's instruction was thorough ...... the smell of freshly baked pizza will soon be wafting around my backyard."
Paul Reidy, Co. Sligo

"Colin and Féile were super hosts, who made me feel very much at ease from the onset. I loved the hands-on nature of the course and look forward to getting started on my own oven. As a 70 year old I found the first day physically demanding - especially carrying and mixing the cob."
George, Bangor, Co. Down
