Renovate Your Cottage

On this 2 day course, a broad range of issues facing anyone with a renovation project in mind will be tackled - particularly if you live in a damp, old building.

What are the current building regulations and how do they affect you? What are your insulation options? Which building methods and materials are compatible and which may lead to future health concerns? Can you save the roof? How do you tackle hanging a door in an off-plumb doorway? Learn to make earth plasters for your walls.

The course will be taught by Colin Ritchie, earth-builder and carpenter, and Féile Butler, earth-builder and architect (MRIAI, Conservation Grade III), in the grounds of their own earth-and-timber-frame house, completed in 2011. Classroom-based lectures will take place in the house.

What to Bring:

There are practical hands-on elements to this course with workshops taking place outdoors. Bring good waterproof clothes and footwear. Clothes/footwear may get muddy.

Bring a notebook and pen for theory. A hardback notebook or a clipboard is advisable if you want to take notes during outdoor workshops.

If you have them - bring a saw, hammer, screwdriver, measuring tape, spirit level, trowel, hawk (mortar board) and pencils. We have extra on site, but if you have your own, you will never have to wait around for them. Please label all personal items before arriving on the course.

Please bring samples of your own soil if you want to test if it is suitable for making your own earth plaster.
